Harmony in Love, part 1. – Opposites Attract: Law of Polarity

Writer: Elina K. Elina K.

In the dance of love, connection, and intimacy – relationships thrive when there is a harmonious balance between feminine and masculine energies, and also these opposites attract each other. The power of polarity can be seen as its strongest in love and relationships.

There exist some universal laws that are like principles or rules that are believed to govern the functioning of the universe. These laws are considered to be fundamental, applying consistently across all domains of existence and to all entities within the universe. While interpretations and specifics may vary across different philosophical, religious, and scientific traditions, I look into some of them in the context of love and relationships. One of the universal laws is the law of polarity, as you might have heard that "opposites attract".

The law of polarity

The law of polarity is the principle that everything has two “poles”: good and evil, love and hate, attraction and disconnection. The Law of Polarity states that there is an opposite for everything in our world; this is necessary for balance within our Universe. Everything has a duality and a built-in opposite that cannot exist without the other. If one side (of anything) has the potential to exist, by the law of polarity, the opposite expression has to exist also.

You can also think this way: Could you know happiness without sadness? Is there love without pain? Dark without light? Everything in the universe has an opposite. Everything is dual. And it’s what allows us to experience life to the fullest and appreciate the good in the world. And in relationships, is there sexual attraction without opposing energies? We might have heard that opposites attract, so you need to get that plus and minus to come together to create that attraction in your relationship – like a battery with its negative and positive terminals.

“For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” This is Newton’s Third Law of Motion, and it sums up the law of polarity perfectly. It means that forces come in pairs: negative and positive, action and reaction, masculine and feminine. You can not only nurture certain energies within yourself but also use the law of polarity to draw other energies to you – like a magnet.

Sexual polarity

Opposing masculine and feminine polarity, when it is truly embraced in a relationship, is what creates that “spark” of sexual energy. Masculine polarity and feminine polarity are not based on gender. Any person, male or female, can embody either energy. This doesn't apply solely to heteronormative relationships, it applies to all.

It is seen, that the more opposed the sexual energies between two people are – masculine vs. feminine energy – that the stronger the attraction will be in the relationship. Physical attraction, and spiritual, and intimate connection thrive in a relationship when there is a distinct sexual polarity between the energies of both partners.

If two people have a similar sexual polarity, that is, both are more “masculine” or more “feminine,” then the attraction between them will be diminished. But if there is a strong difference, where one is extremely “feminine” and the other partner is “masculine,” then the physical attraction will be maximized. It’s “opposites attract” in action.

Unbalanced feminine energy and masculine energy

However, I believe that your relationship can be somewhat in harmony when the "physical attraction is maximized"– but if you have too much feminity or masculinity in yourself, you might be unbalanced personally.

Most times for women, is innate to cultivate feminine qualities, and for men masculine qualities. As a woman, if you cultivate only your feminine side and forget that you need masculine qualities as well, you might not be in balance totally with yourself. However, in today's society in Western countries, women are pushed to strive for masculine traits and values – so it's easy to lose touch with your feminity and natural way of being.

Do you think this has effects on today's romantic relationships as well? Also, polarisation has its opposite: depolarisation. From a sexual polarity point of view, that can happen when partners start to channel the same type of energy, which causes the relationship to become comfortable, stale, tense, or like a friendship.

I will go through more examples of these unbalances in the next blog posts, and in more detail what are the feminine and masculine qualities, and how to balance and cultivate feminine and masculine energies.

It comes always to the art of finding a balance

It’s a complex world we live in – and the human mind is even more complicated. And even though the principle of the law of polarity can make a lot of sense, it's not so simple, and it’s not easy to figure out all the little nuances to balance in all areas in yourself and your relationships.

What’s most important about sexual polarity is knowing your true nature and how it manifests. If you’re in a relationship, you can think about this concept and how different qualities manifest in your relationship.

Looking for love? When you accept and cultivate your innate energy, you’ll naturally attract partners who complement you. Once you understand and embrace the energy you’re putting out, you will attract more of the opposite energy in return.

At my appointments, I aim to make more sense of daily issues for all couples. When talking about feminine and masculine energies it's not weird energy work or spiritual woo-woo, it's very tangible and concrete, balancing with daily chores and other small things or bigger things in life that can draw the whole picture. I warmly encourage you to book your first session here.
